Engineering week is a time for us at Trane Technologies to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of our Engineers! We reached out to a few Engineers and asked a few questions about how they chose their profession and what makes them proud to be an engineer. Read what they had to say:

Ovidio Bocanegra, Director of Engineering Excellence

How did you decide what path within engineering to take?

Since an early age as a little kid in elementary school I loved to build things, and explore how things work.  I became fascinated by the science behind the scenes that explained the “why” artifacts, natural phenomena, and such behave the way they do.  By the time I reached high school it was then very clear for me that I wanted to become an engineer.

What makes you proud to be an engineer for Trane Technologies?

What makes me most proud to be an Engineer for Trane Technologies is that our company values the contributions from every team member.  We really emphasize team work and as an engineer it is fun to interact and collaborate with cross-functional team members with different perspectives and views, which help build our imagination to create new solutions to existing problems.

What is your greatest engineering contribution?

My greatest engineering contribution was the design of a completely new carbon filling station for the launch of an innovative hydrocarbon absorber product for Tier 1 automotive suppliers.  The innovative product was an invention to help our environment by preventing evaporative emissions from the vehicle fuel system to escape into the environment and it was required to meet the Partial Zero Emissions Standard.  I was involved from concept to detailed design and production of this new product, and the invention was assigned as Trade Secret.

What makes a good engineer and why should someone consider engineering as a career?

In my opinion one of the key attributes that make a good engineer is being an inspired problem solver.  Having the creativity to use science with a purpose and apply it to solve problems is fundamental for being a good engineer.

How did you decide what path within engineering to take?

I decided on Product Design Engineer by working through the Accelerated Development Program. I found the work of taking components and making assemblies easy to manufacture, service and operate an exciting and challenging task.

What makes you proud to be an engineer for Trane Technologies?

The history of what has been accomplished and culture around facing the next round of challenges makes me proud to be a Trane Technologies engineer.

What is your greatest engineering contribution?

I believe my greatest engineering contribution will be in the work ahead. Our company has committed to considerable sustainability goals, and our industry has tremendous challenges ahead as we modify and change technology to meet upcoming demand for lower impact products.

What makes a good engineer and why should someone consider engineering as a career?

I believe being passionate makes a good engineer. There are many different roles in engineering, but as long as you find passion in what you are responsible for it seems to provide sustainable and successful results.

I think anyone that has interest in how things are designed or made should consider engineering. There are all kinds of technical roles in engineering, and being good at math is important, but so are soft skills like communication.

How did you decide what path within engineering to take?

I choose to pursue Electrical Engineering as a path because my dad was an electrician and I grew up working projects with him.  In addition, I had the opportunity to attend youth camps for high school students at regional colleges that introduced me to Electrical Engineering concepts.
