Get to know: Jenifer Chamreun, Controls Technician
‘I Wouldn’t Trade this Experience for the World’
Jenifer shares STEM’s influence on her career as an HVAC controls technician
Jenifer Chamreun discovered STEM careers when she was in high school. She didn’t yet know where her career would take her, but she knew she wanted to make an impact on people.
“I don’t imagine many little girls thinking, ‘I want to be an HVAC technician when I grow up,’” Jenifer said, “but my high school mentor gave me advice that would forever affect my career path. He said there are three types of people that make a difference: Doctors change the lives of individual people; educators impact groups of people; and engineers can change the world.”
That advice inspired Jenifer to stay on the STEM career path and become an HVAC controls technician. She joined Trane Technologies’ Oklahoma City office in January 2020.
Up for the challenge
Jenifer’s favorite part of her job is the challenge.
“I love seeing what I’m capable of accomplishing, and the only way to do that is to put me in challenging situations – take me out of my comfort zone,” she said. “My role feels less like a job and more like an arena for me to see how I can fail or succeed.
“At Trane Technologies, there are so many different avenues for me to try virtually anything, from installing equipment to training other people to graphic design. I love that Trane has resources available to help me succeed.”
Jenifer is proud to be part of a team that sees her as a valuable, contributing member.
“I’m proud to be an asset to the team,” she said. “Trane sees me an investment, not someone who is easily replaced. Trane leaders not only praise our individual progress, but also the progress we’ve made collectively. It matters that we grow as a team, as well.”
For the greater good
Jenifer defines her highest level of success as using the wisdom and skills she’s accumulated to benefit the greater good.
“The most challenging part of my job is finding my strengths and incorporating them in a way that will help my team succeed,” she said.
Jenifer’s advice for women interested in HVAC careers
In a phrase, “Secure the bag, sis.” That’s slang for take advantage of the situation and get something of value.
“Being an HVAC controls technician is the job version of an open-ended question,” Jenifer said. “There are so many different things to learn that you can carry with you wherever your journey takes you.
“My boyfriend often asks me to help him put together furniture because I’m much more efficient with power tools. My roommate asked me to troubleshoot a circuit for his oven display because it wasn’t lighting up properly. With my training and experience, I can confidently tell my landlord that I know where the breaker is and that my air conditioner needs servicing. I wouldn’t trade this experience for the world.”
