Military Veteran Honors Our Company
Tom Callahan’s dad served in the U.S. Navy, his grandfather in the U.S. Army. Tom almost joined the Navy right after high school but instead completed HVAC trade school and started working immediately. Currently an area service manager with Trane in Brea, California, Tom said he loved HVAC work, but “always had the desire to serve in the military.”
Nearly 26 years ago, Tom told his wife of his military aspirations and with her support, he joined the National Guard. He served 10 years in the Army National Guard and so far, has served 15 in the Air National Guard, where his current rank is senior master sergeant.
“I get to do both”
Tom has done a total of two and a half years of active duty in Afghanistan, Kuwait and Kyrgyzstan, and since then has done stateside activations. “I love military and HVAC work, so being in the National Guard and working at Trane, I get to do both!” he said.
Tom is a member of our company's Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) and is passionate about our company’s support of military veterans. So passionate, in fact, that when he learned of the Pro Patria Award from his current National Guard unit, he nominated us.
And the company won.
About the award
To recognize and honor employers that support their National Guard and Reserve employees, a U.S. Department of Defense program called Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) grants a series of awards. The Pro Patria Award is part of the series.
Our company won in the large company category, at the North Carolina state level, since its North American headquarters is in that state. The Pro Patria Award is the highest level award that an ESGR State Committee may bestow. Recipients have demonstrated exemplary support through leadership and practices, and adoption of personnel policies that make it easier for their people to participate in the National Guard and Reserve.
We are an equal opportunity employer, dedicated to hiring a diverse workforce; including minorities, females, individuals of all sexual orientations and gender identities, individuals with disabilities, and United States qualified protected veterans.
