How Carter Bloomquist is Busting the Myth that HVAC is Boring

Early-career engineer Carter Bloomquist is proving that HVAC is anything but boring. Through Trane Technologies’ Graduate Training Program, he's discovering the impact, innovation and community that define a career in sustainable HVAC sales.

For Carter Bloomquist, HVAC isn’t just about heating and cooling. It’s about comfort, innovation and impact. And, as a participant in Trane Technologies’ Graduate Training Program, he’s learning to bring all three to life.

“Myth busted,” Carter says with a grin. “From the outside, HVAC might seem boring. But once you dive into it, it’s fascinating.”

My name is Carter Bloomquist, and I am a participant in the Graduate Training Program here in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The Graduate Training Program is an industry-renowned training program for new account managers. My experience in the program so far has been awesome. We’re learning technical topics like building loads and system components, along with personal development and sales skills. It’s been really fun learning together and getting to know everyone in the program. People come from so many different places and cultures, and spending time together has definitely been one of the best parts. I’m excited to bring both my technical knowledge and the relationship-building skills I’m developing to help customers succeed.

Helping achieve the Gigaton Challenge is definitely a goal of mine by supporting customers as they reduce their carbon footprint. As people, it’s our duty to make the world a better place for tomorrow. Trane Technologies does that by boldly challenging what we do and setting a new standard for what companies should be doing for the world.

A career for engineers who love people

Carter studied industrial engineering at Iowa State University, with a minor in sales engineering. He first discovered Trane Technologies through a student club. “I fell in love with the idea of sales engineering because it’s a blend of business, technical knowledge and people,” he explains.

That passion for people is what led him to the Graduate Training Program, a five-month immersive program based in La Crosse, Wisconsin. The Graduate Training Program equips early-career engineers with technical skills, business knowledge and hands-on experience. “This program is industry-renowned,” Carter says. “It’s setting me up to be the best systems account manager I can be.”

Learning, growing and trusting yourself

“The technical side has been incredible,” he shares. “We’ve covered building loads, system components, psychrometry — all the things that make a building work.” But Carter indicates the program is more than HVAC mechanics. “We’ve also focused on personal and professional growth. I’ve learned to trust myself, that I can do hard things.”

Carter credits both the curriculum and the community for his growth. “The culture here is empowering, inclusive and educational. Everyone comes from different places — different states, different countries, different backgrounds — and we’re all learning together.”

Outside the classroom, the connections continue. “We love to hang out together. There’s so much to do in La Crosse. The staff even organizes activities for us. It helps us build relationships.”

Redefining sales engineering

After the program, Carter will return to Trane Technologies’ Twin Cities office as a systems account manager, a role that bridges technical strategy and customer success.

“I’m excited to bring home everything I’ve learned at La Crosse. Not just the HVAC knowledge, but the relationship-building and self-awareness too,” he says. “Our job is to provide comfort to our customers, not just sell products. That and helping customers reduce their carbon footprint.”

Trane Technologies’ purpose to boldly challenge what’s possible for a sustainable world resonates deeply with Carter. “Helping to achieve the Gigaton Challenge is definitely a goal of mine,” Carter says, referencing the company’s goal to help customers reduce 1 billion metric tons of carbon emissions by 2030. “I think we’re setting a new standard for what companies should be doing for the world.”

I tell the engineers that we're bringing into our business today: You're going to have a wild career. This is not your grandfather's HVAC company.
