Profession Meets Purpose: How Sergio is Helping Electrify Transport Refrigeration
When Sergio Blas Medina joined Trane Technologies through the Accelerated Development Program, he was looking for an opportunity to work on technology that mattered. Today, he helps develop electrification solutions at Thermo King that are transforming transport refrigeration and reducing emissions across global supply chains.
When Sergio Blas Medina joined Trane Technologies in Barcelona, he was searching for an opportunity to make an impact. Now the Product Manager for Electrification at our Thermo King® business in Essen, Germany, he develops innovative electrification technologies that reduce emissions across global transport networks.
In 2020, Sergio Blas Medina was looking for a new career path. “It was right after the height of Covid, and I was looking for a fresh start. I saw an advertisement for the Accelerated Development Program, and I felt there was an opportunity to change how things are done. I saw it as a great opportunity for my career.”
Today, Sergio works at the center of Thermo King’s electrification efforts, connecting engineering teams, sales organizations and customers to ensure that new products are thoughtfully designed to solve specific real-world challenges.
I am the person annoying at home that comes after you to say close the fridge, turn down the lights if you don't need them. So those kind of things are really resonated to me. My name is Sergio Blas Medina. I am product manager for electrification in Trane Technologies. I started in the company five years ago. I saw the advertisement for the accelerated development program and I saw it as a great opportunity. In my career, I've always felt that the company supported me. My managers were great, giving me room to explore, to fail of course, and learn from those failures. When I joined, it was 2020, the whole brand and the message around sustainability was really strong for me. I studied engineering. So as a background, I'm really practical and really focused on the use of energy and making efficient as much as I can. So I think that's sustainability portion and getting the most out of less energy consumption is also my daily life. I participated in the circularity and energy efficiency talks and workshops and the fact that I can bring them to work and really make a change and see things moving, that's really resonating with me. We are launching now new solutions in every single space for the Thermo King portfolio. Axle Power is a great solution to put into your trailer fleet that will allow you to recuperate waste energy so you're not burning any fuel, you're not using any additional CO2 emissions on the on the environment. We are innovators. We are bringing cutting-edge technology to the market. I feel empowered to do that. I'm motivated to lead the way. The company is giving me that framework to make that happen. Tomorrow is full of possibilities. They are ours to engineer.
Designing purposeful products: Sustainable electrification
One innovation Sergio is particularly proud of is AxlePower, a system that converts otherwise wasted trailer energy into power for refrigeration. “AxlePower allows you to recuperate energy that would normally be lost when you're braking or driving downhill,” Sergio explains. “Instead of wasting that energy, you use it to power the cooling system, so you're not producing any additional emissions.”
Sergio is also the product manager for the new Thermo King E-Volution line, an all-electric refrigeration unit. High-capacity and whisper-quiet, it’s designed for both electric and conventional trucks, delivering up to 45% lower CO₂ emissions than diesel. “To me, it is the unit of the future for Thermo King,” Sergio says. “It shows customers they can go electric and be sustainable, without compromising on performance or reliability.”
Both innovations tie back to how Sergio thinks about energy use in his everyday life.
Getting the most out of less energy consumption is my daily life. I’m the annoying person at home who reminds everyone to close the fridge and turn off the lights.

Building an accelerated career in electrification
Saying yes to opportunities that aligned with his values was the mindset Sergio carried with him when he decided to join Trane Technologies through the Accelerated Development Program, a rotational program designed to give engineers hands-on experience across different parts of the business. “The Accelerated Development Program gave me that opportunity.”
His rotations took him from Spain, where he worked on smaller truck refrigeration systems, to Germany, where he began focusing on larger truck platforms and electrification technologies.
“The Accelerated Development Program really allowed me to understand how the different parts of the business connect,” he says. “It helped me see how engineering decisions, customer needs and sustainability goals all come together.”
A culture of curiosity
Having benefited from the Accelerated Development Program himself, Sergio now mentors new participants joining the company, helping the next generation of engineers navigate the same opportunities that shaped his career. “They’re going through the same journey I did,” he says. “Helping them explore the company and get the most out of the experience is really rewarding.”
For Sergio, the work has always been as much about people as technology. "I really enjoy feeling like I'm making an impact. I like figuring out how we can deliver the same or better quality systems with more sustainable solutions, and I love developing people and their talents."
That commitment to others reflects the environment he found when he first joined Trane Technologies.
“I've always felt that the company supported me. My managers were great, giving me room to explore, to fail, and to learn from those failures.”
This atmosphere of support and learning creates space to experiment and take ownership of new ideas. “I really like the openness in the company. People are always willing to take time to talk with you and answer your questions.”
Seizing opportunities to make a difference
Mentoring young engineers has also given Sergio a front-row seat to how quickly the industry is evolving. Transport refrigeration is changing rapidly due to stricter environmental regulations, higher cold-chain demand and new digital and electric technologies. For engineers interested in working in technology and sustainability, Sergio believes the opportunities have never been greater. "I'm motivated to lead the way, and Trane Technologies is giving me the framework to make that happen."
For those considering joining the field or the company, his advice is to grab every chance to learn and grow. “Speak up. Ask questions. This is a place where you can learn, explore and really make a difference.”
Tomorrow is full of possibilities, and they're ours to engineer.
